Interesting. Five "great" novels and not one of them have a strong or non-traditionally written female character in a prominent role. Considering how many women are becoming writers these days -- and that this article itself was written by a woman -- we are *all* being dis-serviced. Why divide and conquer by having separate lists? It accomplishes absolutely nothing.

Suggestion For Improvement: Include something more contemporary. In "The Pigman" and "The Pigman's Legacy" by Paul Zindel (RIP), Lorraine's character is an outsider, very smart, and most of all respected for being herself. Her partner-in-crime, John, is just as much an outsider, just as smart, and gives people no choice but to respect him. They work well together and are equals.
