Hmm… good point about the supportive fathers an angst-inducing mothers. Even in cases like A MONSTER CALLS, the relationship with the mom is COMPLICATED.

Oooh, great point Maeve! I can think of a bunch of children’s books with sensible and warm father figures (Because of Winn Dixie for example) but mother figures are harder to find. I’ll have to think on this and see if I can come up with a few. Any suggestions?

I do notice though that all the mothers in your examples are either absent, neglectful, ineffectual, or sources of strife. Hard to find children’s books that feature positive and realistic mother figures that are still alive.
