Jeanette Smith is a writer, editor, speaker, and cat TikToker based in Dallas, Texas.
Once upon a time, Jeanette wrote a story and shared it with a classmate—who hated it. Jeanette’s teacher then told her something she’ll never forget. She said, “Jeanette, everyone is going to criticize your work. That’s what it means to be a writer.” Since then, the only critic Jeanette has listened to is herself.
Today, she makes her living as a freelance writer and editor. She also writes the Editor’s Corner column, covering both the technical and emotional sides of the editing process. Finally, she teaches writers to be better self-editors through her self-editing instruction (called a Compass Call).
Jeanette believes that with the right mindset, knowledge, and tools, every writer can tackle their writing and editing goals to produce the best draft possible.
