In reply to sandyjean412. Saundra, I came across a service like that on a website called fiverr.com (two r's). It was very reasonably priced. I also get asked sometimes by friends (I am a librarian), I am happy to read your small piece, no charge.

In reply to Sue Coletta. Yes. I'm anxious to get started. Still have to get another small project out of the way. Is there a service that, for a fee, will read manuscripts for editing suggestions or simply for their impressions, advice in general?

Thank you! I’m starting to hear my narrative voice, and it reminds of the first time I heard myself on tape. It’s rough, but it’s mine, and I’m going to try to embrace it.

Good advice and great example you gave. Thanks for writing the article. So, we (emerging writers, like myself) should put it in our own words first. Then don’t you think we should go over it again word for word, adding/substituting more “sophisticated”s words or phrases or write more distinctive scenery or characters. In other words, we have to write at least twice – once for the story to get on paper and then to “clean it up” or “put a little make up on it like some women like to do before they go out for the evening? I haven’t gotten very far; I can’t decide whether to write in First or Third person. Then there are other reasons to do a third, or fourth re-write (I’m assuming).
Would you be willing to look a a small piece (sort of flash fiction, except it’s true)? It’s just four pages, as I recall. Someone read it and remarked, “Why would anyone want to read a story like that? It’s too sad!” [I didn’t know her; a friend showed the story to her.].
