Thanks, Tori! Interesting that you mention Bilbo and Thorin's friendship, since theirs gets complicated once Thorin develops "dragon sickness." (Although their friendship is complicated to begin with, isn't it?) But their final conversation is beautifully done, with Thorin asking for Bilbo's forgiveness. A true friend would do the same if they feel sorry for doing the other person wrong and make a true effort to mend their relationship.

Nice! Always good to know another friendship story is making its way into the world. :)

Thanks for stopping by, E.!

In reply to <a href="https://diymfa.com/writing/case-study-friendship-literary-theme/#comment-3439">sjhigbee</a>.

That's a great point, Sarah. Friendships have a whole other dynamic than romances do, and can put a refreshing spin on a story. I love a good "love story," but sometimes I think they overshadow other relationships that can be explored and are just as profound. So it makes me smile when I find a book that manages to balance both.

Thanks for commenting, btw!

I think friendship can be a crucial relationship within a story. It touches on a universal human emotion and can explore all sorts of issues in a more creative and challenging way than a romantic relationship, which tends to fall into patterns that friendships can avoid. Once more, your article gives us an insight how some famous and successful books have used friendships to explore characters, help us bond and show relationships being tested. Thank you for sharing, Sara.

Wonderful post, Sara! I loved your insight on the friendship theme and how it is explored in two of my favourite novels / series! Brilliantly explored! I've taken notes for my newest novella!
