I agree that voice is very hard to define! I have also received compliments on having a good voice in my writing, one that is unique and distinguishable, and yet I still have yet to truly recognize it myself. But I think you covered the topic quite well here with your examples and explanations on the role voice has in writing.

Great post-- I have people say they like my voice, but I myself don't know what it is, LOL. I'm still a new writer, so still grappling with all this. I'm writing in Deep POV, so my narrators' attitudes come through in the narration.

In reply to <a href="https://diymfa.com/writing/the-role-of-voice-in-writing/#comment-124">Joe Lerner</a>.

Good point! In 3rd Person Limited it would be really distracting to have a narrator who's really in your face, so I was thinking in terms of a more omniscient narrator. Remember though, here we're focusing more on the voice of the narrator/characters as opposed to the actual POV used. It's a subtle difference but an important one. POV deals with which characters thoughts/feelings/minds the narrator (and subsequently the reader) can have access to. Voice deals with how the writer puts that into words on the page (i.e. how the voice "sounds" and how visible that narrator is to the reader). In a sense, POV is the "what" while Voice is the "how."

Interesting piece. But isn't the invisible narrator the same as third person limited? If not, what do you think is the difference between the two terms?
