Episode 94: The Art and Craft of Writing Series – Interview with Charlaine Harris

Hey hey word nerds!

I’m so excited to share today’s interview with you. I had the awesome chance to speak with Charlaine Harris, NYT bestselling author of the Sookie Stackhouse series (TRUE BLOOD), the Aurora Teagarden, Harper Connelly, and Lily Bard mystery series; and the Midnight, Texas novels.

Cue fangirl moment in 3… 2… 1…

Seriously, though, I had the opportunity to hear Charlaine Harris speak at ThrillerFest last year. At that point I had already gotten sucked into her True Blood series on HBO, but from the moment she started speaking,I became an instant fan of Charlaine not just as a writer and as a human being. Her advice to writers is not only grounded in common sense, but comes from a place of heart and compassion. This might just be one of the best interviews we’ve had on the show yet.

In this episode Charlaine and I discuss:

  • Revisiting characters in a series
  • Writing your own world with your own rules and then sticking to them
  • Balancing different parameters between genres to help create the best story possible
  • Writing strong women in fiction
  • Nancy Drew and the role of mothers in fiction

Plus, Charlaine’s #1 tip for writers.

About the Midnight, Texas Series

Charlaine Harris’ latest Midnight, Texas novel, Night Shift, is out this month. If you’re into mysteries with a paranormal bent, then you’ll definitely want to check it out. This is the 3rd book in the series, so if you haven’t read the previous two, you may want to read Midnight Crossroad and Day Shift first. As always if you choose to purchase one or more of Charlaine’s books, we hope you’ll consider doing so via these Amazon affiliate links, where DIY MFA gets a small commission at no cost to you. Thank you for supporting DIY MFA!

This Midnight, Texas series is set in the same world as her Sookie Stackhouse novels—which were the basis of HBO’s phenomenally successful hit drama series True Blood. The Midnight, Texas books feature everything readers love about Harris’s writing: humor, mystery, fabulous characters, and a quirky small town setting where paranormal creatures and humans exist side-by-side. To learn more about Charlaine Harris and her amazing books, visit her website, follow her on Twitter, or check out her author page on Facebook.
