Application Deadline: March 20, 2017
One of the core tenets of DIY MFA is building your community. Changes in publishing and technology in the past few years have made it more important than ever for writers to be engaged with readers and other writers. One of the happy results of this shift is that more writers than ever are online. DIY MFA exists because of this shift—it’s a site for writers and by writers. And we’re looking to recruit one (1) more.
Are you passionate about a certain topic that has to do with reading, writing, books or publishing? Do you have a unique voice and creative ideas? Do you want to be part of a vibrant and growing team? Being a DIY MFA columnist might just be the thing for you. This is an opportunity to share your expertise, hone your voice and gain professional experience within a welcoming and encouraging environment.
We recently added four new columnists to the DIY MFA team and we are looking to bring in one more. Specifically, we want a columnist who can contribute to the reading angle of DIY MFA. We would be especially interested in a columnist who is a librarian, works (or has worked) in a bookstore, or teaches literature or literacy in some capacity. While we have several excellent columnists writing about the craft and business of writing, we would love to have one more who can round out the reading side of things.
All articles in our columns will be shared on the DIY MFA website, as well as our social media accounts. This is an awesome opportunity to learn to meet deadlines, work with an editor, and get your writing out there, plus build your audience via the DIY MFA brand. It’s also a relatively light time commitment. Since you will be part of a 5-columnist weekly rotation, you’ll have over a month between deadlines.
How to Apply
Send an email to our Web Editor, Bess Cozby, at bess @ diymfa.com and CC Gabriela Pereira (gabriela @ DIYMFA.com). Just send us a note pitching your column idea, and why you are the person to write it. Please be sure to include the following:
- Three topics for articles in the column
- Links to 2-3 examples of your best published work (If you don’t have any sample articles available online, please write one up, and include it in the body of the email)
- Short bio
- Links to any public social media accounts (including blog, twitter, Facebook page etc.)
Questions?
For more information, or if you have any questions, please email Bess at bess @ diymfa.com. We’re excited to hear from you!
Additional Info
Articles must be the original work of the author.
DIY MFA does not accept reprints or previously-published guest articles.

We will only do this as a last resort, if we feel that the delivered article is not in line with the piece originally pitched by the author.
