Hey there, word nerds! Thanks for joining me for another episode of DIY MFA Radio. I’m so glad you’re here!

Today I’m interviewing Jandra Sutton, the digital media coordinator for PR by the Book, a boutique literary PR firm based in Austin, TX and Nashville, TN. While her job title might not make sense, it’s helpful to know that she is essentially a social media publicist. Her job is to connect authors with their online audiences in a meaningful way, whether that’s managing a full social media campaign for the author or teaching him/her how to navigate the ins and outs of social media (DIY Social Media!)

In this episode, Jandra and I will geek out over one of my favorite topics: social media. She’ll share some pro tips specifically for writers and show you how to use social media to build your author brand and your career.

In this episode Jandra and I discuss:

  • Does social media sell books?
  • Using social media to build your brand.
  • The benefits of social media over the long haul.
  • How to “be a writer” on social media.
  • Some of the common mistakes writers make on social media.

Plus, Jandra’s #1 tip for writers.

More about Jandra Sutton:

A writer (political/current affairs/history) and publishing/digital media professional with over five years of experience in developing social media strategies for small businesses, non-profits, international brands, publishers and authors, Jandra Sutton has been – since social media’s outset – transfixed by the medium and the ever-evolving ways it allows for communicating with the marketplace.

Previously the marketing director at Turner Publishing, Jandra oversees all digital/social media operations for PR by the Book firm and its expanding roster of clients. She works alongside senior publicist Jason Jones in PR by the Book’s Nashville office.

A graduate of Huntington University in Huntington, IN with a B.A. in History, she went on to receive an M.A. in Modern British History from the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom.

Writing and digital media aside, she also enjoys cooking, fitness, and walking with her dog, Leila, around Music City. If you want to know more, you can follow her on Twitter or visit her website.

Also check out her blog posts How to Rock Social Media, Part One: Which Networks Should You Use? and Why Does Social Media Matter?  She’s also doing a series on Twitter right now called #ProTips, where she publishes a new tip (usually) every day. Follow the hash tag or look for PR By the Book on Twitter for these daily tips.
